In the space of only a few short years, the Famine killed one million people in Ireland and a million more emigrated as refugees. 100,000 of these displaced Irish escaped to a new life in Scotland, mainly to the Glasgow and Lanarkshire areas of the west. For several decades following the Famine, these refugees were joined by thousand more Irish fleeing to Scotland for work and survival.

These Irish emigrants entered an environment that was traditionally anti-Irish and anti-Catholic. The deprivation and abject poverty they left behind in Ireland was continued amidst the destitute and deprived circumstances and environment experienced in Scotland.

To fund the soup kitchens that would help feed the Catholic poor of the Irish Diaspora in the East end of Glasgow, Brother Walfrid, a Sligo born member of the Marist Order, along with a number of his fellow countrymen, founded Celtic Football Club.
