GERRY O'CONNOR & GILLES LE BIGOT IN CONCERT -CD~~Ireland’s dazzling fiddler and the Breton guitar whiz play sparkling and immaculate music of the Celts Gerry has just been awarded the 'Live Ireland Award, Best Male Artist for 2006’ Gerry O'Connor"Sparkling" " Immaculate" and with "Dazzling Ability" were words used recently by the national Press to describe the music of Gerry O'Connor, one of Ireland's most outstanding fiddle players. His family has played fiddle for at least four generations and Gerry is able to draw on this wealth of music learned from his mother Rose O'Connor and also from hand-written manuscripts passed down through the family. Later he came under the influence of Joe Gardiner the great Sligo fiddle player, who lived in Dundalk for many years. Gerry breathes new life and intensity into many long forgotten tunes from his home area in the North East of Ireland. His unique personal style and splendidly fluid bow-hand combined with technical virtuosity have brought him to concert stages throughout the world and have earned him international renown. He is a founding member of the band Skylark and recorded four albums with this highly respected band that had toured Europe for 10 years. The Brighid's Kiss album of his own band La Lúgh was voted album of the year 1996.Gerry has worked on many projects, including working with musicians including Donal Lunny, Breton guitarist Gilles le Bigot, and Italian pianist Antonio Breschi. The "West Wind" project, involving twelve prominent Breton and Irish musicians was one of the creative highlights of L'lmaginaire lrlandais in France in July 1996.Gerry is also a trained violin maker and an experienced and enthusiastic fiddle teacher who has given master classes to students of Traditional Music in over 16 countries on three Continents. He was awarded his diploma in violin making at Cork School of Music in 1985, and he has a huge selection of fiddles, including French and German fiddles in his Dundalk studio. With Desi Wilkinson he has developed an entertaining and informative schools Concert / Lesson program "About Traditional Music", based around the fiddle and flute, and he is presently designing a course to facilitate the introduction of Traditional music by second level music teachers to their music students. Gilles le BigotGuitarist, Gilles le Bigot is from the French coastal town of St Brieuc in Brittany. He stands alongside the likes of Alan Stivell in the revival of traditional Breton music, and his unique open-tuning guitar playing has defined a generation of Breton tunes. While Stivell is the best-known individual in the ongoing revival of Breton “roots” music, Skolvan is the key band, with Gilles le Bigot on guitar, alongside saxophone, accordion, percussion and the famous piston, or baroque oboe.
