ADAM & PAUL - DVD REGION 2~Adam & Paul - DVD~
"Comedic genius" - Irish Independent
"Trouser-soakingly funny...side-splitting; savage, yet heart-felt... this is, quite simple, great" - In Dublin
"Adam & Paul is an unmitigated pleasure. One of the best Irish movies you are likely to have ever seen. A genuinely essential tragic comedy..." - Hot Press
Friends since they were small boys, Adam and Paul have withered into two hapless, desperate Dublin junkies, tied together by habit and necessity.
A stylized, downbeat comedy, the film follows the pair through a single day, which, like every other, is entirely devoted to the business of scrounging and robbing money for drugs.
The difference today is that Adam and Paul, already near rock bottom, have finally run out of luck, credit and friends.

BLOOM - Dvd All regions compatible~The Story of James Joyce's Ulysses starring Stephen Rea & Angeline Ball'Bloom' brings 'Ulysses' to the masses~The Story of James Joyce's Ulysses starring Stephen Rea & Angeline Ball'Bloom' brings 'Ulysses' to the massesBy Michael GreyOne of the highlights of New York's Irish cultural calendar is the Irish Repertory Theatre's Annual Gala Benefit. This year's event, the 11th since the founding of the theater, was held last week at the Director's Guild of America on Manhattan's West 57th Street, and, in a departure from the usual stage format, the Rep presented the New York premiere of Sean Walsh's new feature film "Bloom". Based on James Joyce's "Ulysses", and launched with exquisite timing as the centenary celebrations for Bloomsday gain momentum, "Bloom" is a labor of love for producer/director Walsh. The film was 10 years in the making, three years longer than it took Joyce to write the book. The difficulty of raising funds to make a film from a work regarded as daunting and, possibly, unfilmmable, occupied the director during this time as much as the more delicate business of adapting the revered text to celluloid-friendly format. "Ulysses" has proved notoriously difficult in the past to transfer from page to screen, and the only completed version to date remains Joseph Strick's sprawling attempt from 1967, starring Milo O'Shea in the Leopold Bloom role. Joyce's recurring use of unpunctuated stream-of-consciousness by his three principal characters lends itself more readily to a radio-drama format than a cinematic treatment, and Strick's film quickly surrenders all visual ambition as it reduces to a monotonous lineup of talking heads and voice-overs. Despite legendary film critic Pauline Kael's acerbic dismissal of Strick's film as "readings from the book, illustrated by slides?" the "Ulysses" script was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Undaunted by Strick's failure to bring the book to life on screen, Walsh's objective in tackling the Joyce tome is a noble one: to deliver Joyce's masterpiece to a mainstream audience, by highlighting its broad comedy and robust use of Dublin language. A chart-topper on numerous 20th century fiction best-of lists compiled by critics around the globe, "Ulysses" remains a book more often bought than read, and Walsh resolved to wrestle the book from the academics and give it back to the ordinary people for whom, he feels, Joyce intended it. Walsh's project attracted a stellar cast in the form of Stephen Rea as Leopold Bloom, the peripatetic Dublin ad-canvasser, and former Commitment Angeline Ball as his salacious soprano wife, Molly. Joseph O'Conor, who delivered an impressive debut performance as a child actor in "My Left Foot" playing the young Christy Brown, takes on the role of the young writer, Stephen Dedelus, Joyce's fictional alter ego. The fourth major character, the city itself, has changed so dramatically from Joyce's 1904 that we see little more than glimpses of the built fabric of Dublin during Bloom's ambling odyssey. Walsh's efforts to externalize the interior monologues of his characters and take them out onto the cobbled streets and granite pavements of the city center are hampered by the dramatic physical changes of the Celtic Tiger years -- the camera must of necessity be blinkered to exclude the satellite dishes, plate glass office buildings, and SUV's of a 21st century city of that has ceased to be itself and looks more like any other city, anywhere else. Clocking in at a tidy running time of under two hours, "Bloom" is a lean distillation of the high points of the unwieldy text, and should fulfill Walsh's ambition to spur Joyce-dodgers to take the book down from the shelf, dust it off, and read it right to the end this time. Walsh is still looking for a U.S. theater distribution deal, but the film will be available on video and DVD from MTI Home Video beginning Aug. 24. To commemorate the Bloomsday centenary, screenings will be held in Boston, Chicago and Sarasota, Fla., on June 16. And if you miss it this year, "Bloom" will undoubtedly make a reappearance next year and every year thereafter around mid-June, as a perennial component of the Bloomsday celebrations. Dancing At Lughnana
A young boy tells the story of growing up in a fatherless home with his unmarried mother and four spinster aunts in 1930's Ireland. Each of the five women, different from the other in temperament and capability, is the emotional support system, although at times reluctantly, for each other, with the eldest assuming the role of a 'somewhat meddling' overseer. But then into this comes an elderly brother, a priest too senile to perform his clerical functions, who has "come home to die" after a lifetime in Africa; as well, there also arrives the boy's father, riding up on a motorcycle, only to announce that he's on his way to Spain to fight against Franco. Nevertheless, life goes on for the five sisters, although undeniably affected by the presence of the two men, they continue to cope as a close-knit unit... until something happens that disrupts the very fabric of that cohesiveness beyond repair.

Directed by Paddy Breathnach, starring Allen Leech, Tom Jordan Murphy, Ciaran Nolan, Sean McGinley, Fionnula Flanagan and Pat Shortt.Three luckless Belfast chancers claim a greyhound named Cerberus after doing a favour for dodgy bookmaker J.P. McCallion (Sean McGinley). It's not long before they find out that they have, in fact, been sold a pup, or at least, a racing dog that can't run straight. Soon back in heavy debt to the same bookie they got the dog from, they set off to the South, cut their losses by selling the dog to some gypsies, but realise too late that Cerberus is a natural hare coarser, good enough to net them a tidy sum at the biggest hare coursing event in Ireland at Clonmel, and get one over on McMallion at the same time. So they steal the mutt back and hit the road to Clonmel with the bookie and gypsies on their tail and out for their blood. Sharply scripted by Pearse Elliot and with a cast of relative unknowns proving themselves as talents to look out for, director Paddy Breathnach's fifth feature is a broad, ballsy and breakneck comedy that never lets up.~MAN ABOUT DOG (CERT 15)|D099981|~11200~10258~Man About Dog~
THE MATCHMAKER - DVD (REGION 2 PAL)~~As she does in The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Janeane Garofalo proves she's a capable leading lady--beautiful, charming, self-effacing, and what used to be referred to as sharp as a tack. Garofalo plays Marcy, aide to dim Massachusetts senator McGlory (Jay O. Sanders). Denis Leary is appropriately slimy as a fellow aide. The senator and Nick dispatch Marcy to the remote (and fictitious) Irish town of Ballinagra, where she's supposed to unearth relatives to use in the senator's PR campaign. Along the way, Marcy not only encounters the eccentric locals, but finds herself in the maelstrom of the town's annual matchmaking festival. The single Marcy inadvertently catches the eye of the movie's eponymous matchmaker Dermot (a captivating Milo O'Shea). Dermot senses sparks between Marcy and the equally cynical, recently returned local boy, Sean (David O'Hara), once a successful journalist who's returned home to work on a book. The intimacies of the small town, the relationships between the locals, and the dialogue are credible and engaging. Look for beautiful cinematography and music, too. Also notable is the movie's ability to convey the feel of a foreign film while injecting humor that's both sarcastically American and yet Irish in trademark. --N.F. Mendoza

THE QUIET MAN - DVD~The Quiet Man~One of John Ford's most cherished projects, THE QUIET MAN took years to finance but became one of his greatest box-office successes and an enduringly beloved classic. John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, a retired American boxing champion trying to put tragedy behind him by returning to Innisfree, the bucolic Irish village of his birth. He purchases his birthplace from its current owner, enraging the wealthy and bellicose Red Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen), who had designs on the property. On arriving at his cottage, Thornton finds it being swept out by Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara), a redheaded vision from whom he steals a not completely unwelcome kiss. After engaging in a subterfuge involving a horse race, some of the locals manage to get the disgruntled Red Will to allow his sister to be courted by the American. But the courtship ritual of the village is only the first of many local practices that the bewildered Thornton must endure if he is to have Mary Kate. Wayne gives a surprisingly nuanced performance as the fish out of water, and he is perfectly matched with the radiantly rambunctious O'Hara. The rest of the cast is splendid as well, and the lush color photography garnered an Academy Award for Winston Hoch. John Ford also won an Oscar for his directing, and it's impossible not to be charmed by the artistry with which he weaves his rollicking, robust tale.

WHEN BRENDAN MET TRUDY-DVD~~The title has a romantic comedy resonance (`When Harry Met Sally') and, true, this is a romantic comedy, but it's different – Irish, in fact. It has an edgy character that seems to say it's just that little bit more dangerous to laugh here. The opening scene is of a man in pouring rain lying face down in a Dublin gutter and a voice over saying `it all started six months ago'. Brendan (Peter McDonald), history and English schoolteacher and film buff, best described as afraid of life, meets Trudy (Fiona Montgomery), blonde, bouncing, full of life, and Brendan is swept along. Trudy, however, has a secret…at first Brendan thinks she might be the Rathmines castrator, but she turns out to be a professional thief. Naturally Brendan gets involved, and the climactic caper is an attempt to steal computers from Brendan's school, which Brendan justifies on luddite grounds - the kids need to learn how to think without machines – a chalk is the only technology a good teacher needs, says Brendan.Despite the rain, this film, written by Roddy Doyle and directed by first-time director Kieron Walsh, is really a very sunny piece. As Brendan becomes more and more distracted, his elderly headmaster summons him in for a talk, only to tell him not to worry about the complaints. The spirit of rebellion infects Brendan's mother, who starts to use words you don't expect Irish mothers to use. Brendan's sister and husband (`middle class and proud of it') turn out to be a bit kinky as well.
